I have wanted to be an appellate court justice since 1984, when I was a law clerk (they called them briefing attorneys) at the 14th Court of Appeals for Justice William E. Junell. I returned to the 14th Court after my second child was born and worked as a research attorney for about 18 months.
I left the court of appeals to join the private practice of W. James Kronzer, a legend in Texas appellate law. During my eight years with “Mr. K,” I worked with and against many of the major Houston law firms on all types of civil appeals and civil litigation. Mr. Kronzer’s only complaint about me was that I was “too objective.” He thought I should seek an appellate bench some day.
I became board certified in civil appellate law by the authority of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in December 1990 and have been recertified three times.
From 1995 through 2000, I worked as a solo practitioner and wrote the first edition of O’Connor’s Texas Causes of Action.
I joined the law firm of Zimmerman, Axelrad, Meyer, Stern & Wise, P.C. in January 2000. My main work there was in civil business litigation at the trial court level, but I also handled several appeals. From January 2006 through today I have changed my focus away from business litigation to pro bono legal work, volunteering and this campaign. I am co-chair of the Speakers Bureau Committee of the Houston Bar Association.
In my most recent appellate case, I represented an injured worker who was denied lifetime benefits by the Texas Workers’ Compensation Commission. I argued, and the Court of Appeals agreed, that the Workers Compensation Commission appeals panel has been misinterpreting the Workers’ Compensation statute and wrongly denying lifetime benefits to brain-injured workers for years. The Ninth Court opinion is published as Liberty Mutual Ins. Co. v. Camacho, 228 S.W.3d 453 (Tex. App. – Beaumont 2007, pet. denied).
My husband and I celebrated our 29th wedding anniversary in July. We are the proud parents of three sons.
My race covers 10 counties: Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Colorado, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Waller and Washington.
